Our guest this episode is bespoke tailor Roshan Melwani. When we talk about creating clothing, is it hard to create a suit, or is it hard to do it well? What is hard is crossing the road, you could get run over by a car. Nothing else in life is hard. For my team, it’s more difficult for them to communicate in English than it is to make a suit. They’re experts, they have decades and decades worth of experience. I have dozens of guys who have worked with my family for over 50 years. They have been tailors longer than both you and I have been alive. Nobody wants to grow up to be a tailor, that’s all it is. All these young kids following me on Instagram and TikTok are dying to be me, but they’re not willing to put in the work. I’ve been on the job 24 years straight, but moreover, I grew up in this business. It takes decades to get good at it because it’s done by hand, and people don’t grow up doing things by hand anymore. If you’re 18 now and you want to become a bespoke tailor, all you’ve done since birth is play with your iPad, so it’s very difficult. My price competitive advantage is second to none; dollar for pound, I’m the best on the planet. Bespoke clothing is more sought after right now than it has ever been. Why is that? You understand how hot guys look in these clothes? You put a suit on, you walk through the door, every woman is like, “Oh my god, I love a man in a suit.” Mad Men comes on TV, Suits comes on TV, everybody wants to wear a suit. Young kids love getting dressed up, and they love me because I bring fun to it. Why does bespoke look better than off the rack? Because it’s made exactly to your measurements. There’s no such thing as your measurements when you buy off the rack. They make it for a generic man. You are not a generic man. What is the difference between made to measure and bespoke? Made to measure is when they take a pattern and adjust it to your measurements. Bespoke is when they cut a pattern for you from scratch, your own pattern, kept in the shop forever. Your second suit will always fit better than your first because we have your pattern. What should every man own? A navy blazer. You can wear a navy blazer with jeans, with chinos, with trousers. You can wear it to a wedding, to a funeral, to a job interview. It is the most versatile garment a man can own. How should a man choose a tailor? Look at the photographs on the wall. Every tailor who is any good has photographs of their clients on the wall. If those clients look good, the tailor is good. And look at the tailor’s own clothes. If the tailor dresses well, he can dress you well. Social media didn’t create my success; it just gave me a free window to show the world what I do every day. It’s my own free reality TV.
